How to Start an Export Business in India (2026 Guide)

Starting an export business can feel very confusing. There is a lot of information online, and it is hard to know where to begin. This guide will break down the process into 3 simple steps so you can understand exactly what you need to do.

Step 1: The Setup (Registration)

Before you can sell anything, your business must be legally registered.

  • Form a Company: You can start simple as a Proprietorship. You just need a GST Registration and a Current Bank Account.
  • Get your IEC: Apply for your Import Export Code (IEC) online at the DGFT website. It takes 10 minutes and costs ₹500.
  • Get your RCMC: Register with the correct Export Promotion Council for your product (like APEDA for food, or FIEO for general goods). This helps you get government benefits.

Step 2: The Process (Product & Buyer)

Now that your company is ready, it is time to do business.

  • Choose a Product: Pick a product you can easily buy from local suppliers at a good price. Do not pick 10 products; focus on just one or two to start.
  • Find Buyers: Instead of waiting for buyers to find you, reach out to them. Use LinkedIn, Google, and Indian Embassies to find importers in other countries.
  • Calculate Pricing: Make sure you know all the costs (product cost, transport to port, customs fees, and shipping) so you can give the buyer a correct price.

Step 3: Post-Export (Shipping & Payment)

You found a buyer and they placed an order. What next?

  • Prepare Documents: You will need a Proforma Invoice, Commercial Invoice, and Packing List.
  • Hire a Freight Forwarder and CHA: These are the experts who will move your goods to the port and clear them through customs. You do not need to do this yourself!
  • Get Paid: Ensure your buyer pays you through secure bank channels (like an Advance Payment or Letter of Credit). Once the money arrives in India, your bank will issue an e-BRC to close the transaction.
