How to Register for IEC Online in 2026

You can register for an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) online via the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in) by creating an account, clicking 'Apply for IEC', filling out your PAN, business, and bank details, uploading a canceled cheque and address proof, and paying a government fee of ₹500. The e-IEC is usually generated instantly.

What is an IEC?

The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-digit key business identification number which is absolutely mandatory for Exports or Imports from India. No person or entity shall make any import or export without an IEC Number granted by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Previously, it was a physical certificate, but today it is entirely digital (e-IEC) and linked directly to your PAN card.

What are the Prerequisites for an IEC Application?

Before you sit down to apply, ensure you have the following documents ready in PDF or JPEG format (under 5MB):

  • PAN Card: Of the business entity (for companies/LLPs) or the individual (for proprietorships).
  • Valid Mobile Number and Email ID: These must be active, as you will receive OTPs for verification.
  • Bank Account: A current account in the name of the business. You will need a canceled cheque bearing the entity's pre-printed name or a bank certificate.
  • Address Proof: Of the business premises (Sale Deed, Rent Agreement, Lease Deed, Electricity Bill, Telephone Landline Bill, Mobile Postpaid Bill, MOU, or Partnership Deed).
  • Aadhaar Card: Essential for the final e-signature step if you are applying as a proprietor or director.

Step-by-Step Registration Process

Follow these steps to generate your IEC without paying thousands of rupees to consultants:

  1. Visit the DGFT Portal: Navigate to the official DGFT website at dgft.gov.in.
  2. Register/Login: Click on 'Login' and select 'Register'. Create a new user account as an 'Importer/Exporter'. Verify your email and mobile number via OTP.
  3. Apply for IEC: Once logged in, go to the dashboard and click on the 'Apply for IEC' button.
  4. Fill the General Details: Enter your PAN details. The system will validate it with the CBDT database. Fill in your business name, date of incorporation, and registered address.
  5. Add Branch Details (If Any): If your business has multiple branches or factories, add their addresses here.
  6. Enter Director/Partner Details: Add the details of all directors, partners, or the proprietor, including their PAN and residential addresses.
  7. Upload Documents: Upload your canceled cheque and your address proof in the designated sections.
  8. Pay the Fee: The official government fee for an IEC application is ₹500. Pay this online via credit card, debit card, or net banking.
  9. Preview and Sign: Preview the application. Finally, sign it digitally using Aadhaar e-Sign (OTP sent to Aadhaar-linked mobile) or a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
  10. Submit and Download: Once successfully signed and submitted, the system will process your application. In most cases, your e-IEC certificate is generated instantly and available for download.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need a separate IEC if I already have GST?

Yes. While your IEC number will be the same as your PAN, you still must explicitly register on the DGFT portal to activate your PAN as an IEC. Having a GST number does not automatically grant you export/import rights.

Do I need to renew my IEC?

Yes. The DGFT requires all IEC holders to update or confirm their IEC details electronically every year between April 1st and June 30th. Even if there are no changes, you must log in and confirm the details to prevent your IEC from being deactivated.

Can an individual get an IEC without registering a company?

Yes, an individual can apply for an IEC as a Sole Proprietorship using their personal PAN and a current bank account in the name of their proprietorship firm.
