What is an IEC Code and How to Get It in 10 Minutes

If you want to sell products outside India, the government requires you to have an Import Export Code (IEC). It is the foundation of your export business. The good news? It is very easy to get, and you can apply for it online in just 10 minutes.
What is an IEC Code?
An IEC (Import Export Code) is a 10-digit number given by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India. You need this number for all your export and import activities. Think of it as a special passport for your business.
Without an IEC, your goods cannot clear customs, and your bank cannot receive foreign money for your exports.
Who Needs an IEC?
- Anyone starting an export or import business.
- Individuals or companies (Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, or Pvt Ltd).
- You only need one IEC per PAN card. It is valid for your lifetime!
Documents Required
To get your IEC, you just need a few basic documents ready on your computer:
- Your PAN Card (or Company PAN Card)
- A Cancelled Cheque (with your name or company name printed)
- Address Proof (Rent agreement, electricity bill, or Aadhar card)
How to Apply (The 3 Simple Steps)
Step 1: Go to the official DGFT website (dgft.gov.in) and create an account using your email and mobile number.
Step 2: Fill out the online application form. You will enter your PAN details, bank details, and upload the documents listed above.
Step 3: Pay the government fee (₹500) online. After payment, your IEC will be generated automatically and sent to your email!
